Sue Ribet Obituary

DURHAM: Sue Madden Snipes Ribet, 87, of Durham passed away peacefully on Jan. 20, 2018 at Duke University Hospital after a brief illness. The daughter of the late Thornwell Columbus Madden, Sr., and Bertha Jane Shaw, Sue was a native of Hart County, GA, and grew up in Anderson, SC. She was the widow of William Oswald (Bill) Snipes (d. 1966) and of Lee Frank Ribet (d. 2011). She is survived by daughter Cynthia Ann (Cindy) Snipes of Oxford, NC, son Ronald William (Ron) Snipes and daughter-in-law Jewel, of New Bern, NC, grand-daughters Tracy Snipes and Jennifer Boring Hasty (Richard), great-grandson Henry Hasty, her sisters Jenny Smith of Anderson, SC, and Betty Wiles (Robert) of Starr, SC, several nieces and nephews, longtime special friends Bill Oakley, David Claris, and Ron Harmon, and her rescue pups Sallie and Daisy. She was predeceased by brothers Thomas, Judson, and T.C. Madden, Jr.; and sisters, Sallie Moon, Frances Moon, Margaret Wilson, and Laura Lyon. Sue lived in Spring Hope, NC for many years assisting her husband with the Snipes family business and raising their 2 children. The family were members of Spring Hope First Baptist Church. Moving to Durham to wed Lee Ribet in 1968, Sue became a member of Calvary United Methodist Church. She always had a great passion for serving the church in many ways, especially using her cooking skills. She volunteered for the American Red Cross Bloodmobile, and became a reading tutor at George Watts Elementary School where her personal warmth deeply touched the children's hearts; in later years many of them would greet her enthusiastically in fond remembrance of how she had helped them. Later she volunteered for over 20 years for the Council for Senior Citizens of Durham. Strong and undaunted by age, even in recent years Sue could always be found in her yard pursuing her love of flowers and vegetable gardening. Sue routinely attended several bingo games, as well as senior functions at many churches where she was known as "Miss Banana Pudding Lady". Funeral services will be held Fri. Jan 26 at 11 o'clock at Clements Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Chris Agoranos and Rev. Laurie Hays-Coffman officiating. Interment services will follow at 3 o'clock at Spring Hope Memorial Gardens, Rev. Kevin Moore officiating. The family will receive friends Thurs. evening from 6 until 8 o'clock at Clements Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Calvary Methodist Church, Durham, or to the charity of your choice. The family is being assisted by Clements Funeral Service, Inc. in Durham.
