SPRING HOPE – Elsie Ray Gardner Sledge, 91, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 5, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. In recent years, she faced several health challenges with remarkable courage, supported every step of the way by her devoted children.
Elsie was a beautiful, loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She loved the Lord wholeheartedly and lived a life centered on serving others. A faithful member of Holly Grove Baptist Church for 71 years, she found great joy in singing in the choir and caring for children in the nursery.
Known for her humility, strong work ethic, and deep faith, Elsie shared her gifts generously. She lovingly crafted beautiful garments and was well known for preparing delicious meals - especially her cherished biscuits - for family and friends. Her warm smile and kind eyes brought comfort and joy to all who knew her, and children, in particular, held a special place in her heart.
Elsie was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel "Ernest" and Katherine "Katie" Joyner Gardner; her husband of 60 years, Paul Sledge, Jr.; a special son-in-law, Howard Gillis; and fifteen siblings.
She leaves to cherish her memory her son, Thomas Ray Sledge (special friend Debra); daughters, Carolyn Gillis and Brenda Hoyle (Richard); brothers, Roy, Troy (Grace), and Larry (Sharon); grandchildren, Nicki Stoner (Bert), Steven Bryant (Lezlie), Jonathan Hoyle (Heather), Katherine Hoyle, and Lori Duke (David); twelve great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Holly Grove Baptist Church, with Dr. Sean Lee officiating. Visitation will follow immediately after the service.
