Adolph Binkey,Jr. was born in Kansas City, Missouri, on April 2, 1922. He was brought up in San Diego California by German immigrant parents. Binkey was devoted to his loving wife Jennie Cook Shearin of Ceder Rock, North Carolina for 61 years. He loved his church the Gibson United Methodist of Spring Hope, NC. He served as usher; board of Trustee and was a past president of the Methodist men group. He was an avid photographer, computer enthusiast and gardener. He retired from San Diego North Island Naval Air Station with more than 33 years in civil service as a electrical, electronic prototype technician. Binkey served in the airborne Army in World War II as a radio operator gliderman in the 13th , 17th, and 82nd divisions. He also served in the 78th Division at Camp Butner, NC. During the Korean conflict he served in the Air Force as a radio operator in the 22nd Bomb Wing. Binkey's total active time in the arm forces was seven years. He is survived by his daughter Vivian Dietz and son in-law Dr. Nikolaus Dietz of Atlanta, Georgia, nephew; Phillip Harris and his wife Joan of Raleigh, NC, great niece; Susan and husband Gregg Bavisotto and children; Easton and Connor. Binkey was a faithful member of the American Legion and life time member of Veterans of Foreign Wars organizations. He was a 49 year member of the American Legion. He belonged to Spring Hope Vester Wheless, NC American Legion Post 91 and served as adjutant for eight years. He also served as Quartermaster of Bailey, NC VFW War Memorial Post 4147 for 7 years. Binkey belonged to the La Sosciete 40 and 8 for 25 years was awarded Sous Conductor for his work in 1991 San Diego, California national 40 and 8 convention. Binkey also belonged to the Wilson, NC 40 and 8 Voiture No. 930. He was a member of Past Department of California Legion Historians and a life member of the California Past Commanders Legion club. Binkey served most of the chairs of his American Legion in La Mesa, California post No. 282, which had a membership in excess of twelve hundred members. As a member he received two national and state awards for best history for a post historian and three best Americanism honors. Binkey has always been devoted to helping veterans and their families. He was always available to fold the flag for a veteran funeral service. With the assistance of scout and cub packs Binkey arranged that all veterans graves at Oak Dale and Spring Hope cemeteries were decorated with flags on Veterans and Memorial Day's. Binkey kept a complete record of every veteran buried at Oak Dale and Spring Hope cemeteries. He initiated for his American Legion and VFW posts to presenting to the Southern Nash High School Air Force Jr. R.O.T.C. cadets with medals for their military excellence. Binkey also organized and dedicated the flag pole that stands in front of Oak Dale cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday, October 23, 2015 from 6:30 - 8:30 pm at Spring Hope Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at Gibson Memorial United Methodist Church in Spring Hope, NC on Saturday, October 24 with Rev. Andrew Hook of Gibson United Methodist Church Officiating.
