Genora Harris Greene

Spring Hope.......... Genora H. Greene, 88, went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at Spring Arbor of Rocky Mount. Funeral services will be Saturday, February 18, 2017 at First Baptist Church of Spring Hope at 1:00 PM. Rev. Kevin Moore and Rev Greg Anderson will officiate. Interment will follow service at Oakdale Cemetery in Spring Hope. Genora leaves to cherish her memory, one sibling, Julian Harris (Marie) of Raleigh; daughters, Delma Jefferys (Tony) and Cathie Beatty (Tom) ; grandchildren, Kate Borizov, (Boris), Justin Carter, Fletcher Beatty, Tyler Carter (April); and great-grandchildren, Savannah Borizov, Lilah Borizov, Waylon Carter, Jace Carter, and Jerelyn Carter. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alex Edmond Greene in 1997. Genora was a native of Franklin County, born on her family's farm on July 21, 1928 to George and Lucille Harris. She was one of five children. She attended Edward Best High School, graduating at age 16. She attended East Carolina Teachers College, graduating in 1949, with a minor in social studies and a major in home economics. She married her high school sweetheart, Alex Edmond Greene and they made a home in the Holly Grove Community of Spring Hope, where they had two daughters, Cathie and Delma. Genora began her career teaching home economics at Coopers High School. In 1954, she became a social worker at Nash County DSS. Thus began a life of service to the community and a commitment to social services. She became a social work supervisor in 1959. She went to UNC for graduate school, obtaining a Masters of Social Work and in 1965 became the Director. During her career, she was a strong advocate for children and families and touched many lives through her work. She was the first female Director of Social Services in Nash County and was recognized as a leader in social services across North Carolina and was active in the Director's Association. She was a mentor for her colleagues, encouraging professional development and excellence in leadership. Her ability to see potential in others and to support their growth was her hallmark. She credits her parents with any contributions she made to the county. She always hoped to be as wise as her father and as humble as her mother. Following her work at DSS, she continued to serve her church as a Sunday school teacher and deacon. She delivered Meals on Wheels for many years and worked at Faith Christian Ministries through her mid to late eighties. Genora's family wishes to express their gratitude for the excellent care she received while living at Spring Arbor of Rocky Mount. They would like to thank Doctor May of Boice-Willis Clinic and Doctor Boyette of Nash Hospice, as well as the hospice nursing staff. They are grateful for the kindness and compassion with which they cared for her. The family will receive friends Friday, February 17, 2017, 6 - 8 pm at Spring Hope Funeral Home and other times at the home of Delma Jefferys, 107 N.
